Navigating Rensselaer & Beyond
Navigating Rensselaer & Beyond (NRB) is the official continuation of your orientation program that includes adventure/team building activities, historical/cultural programs, and community service opportunities all designed to help students get to know one another. One of the goals of NRB is to assist all incoming students in connecting with classmates while participating in interest-based activities. Another is to familiarize our new members of the Rensselaer community with not only the campus but also the city of Troy and surrounding areas.
NRB overnight experience Block A – optional
For students attending SO sessions 1-4:
Sunday, August 23 – Tuesday, August 25
You have the opportunity to take part in one of eight different and exciting overnight trips. These trips are designed to help you connect with Rensselaer classmates, faculty, and staff before the official NRB week kicks off.
NRB overnight experience Block B – optional
For students attending Session 5
Friday, August 21 – Sunday, August 23
You have the opportunity to attend Adventure Quest at Silver Bay. This trip is designed to help you connect with Rensselaer classmates, faculty, and staff before the official NRB week kicks off.
NRB week – required
Tuesday, August 25 – Sunday, August 30
The Office of the First-Year Experience has planned a series of activities that will appeal to the broad array of interests that exist among Rensselaer students. For the whole day Wednesday, August 26, you will be pre-registered into an activity according to your interests. For these activities, you must complete the Navigating Rensselaer & Beyond day trip registration form that was mailed home and return it to the Office of the First-Year Experience no later than July 3. Beginning Thursday afternoon we move to a more typical campus atmosphere where you and your friends will decide what you’d like to do; pre-registration is not required.
NRB “beyond”
Throughout the academic school year
The “beyond” represents the idea that Orientation does not end after classes begin. The Office of the First-Year Experience offers a variety of programs to continually support a seamless transition for our newest members of Rensselaer. Please visit our Web site throughout the year for more details on our “beyond” programs.
Student athletes
If you are participating in a fall junior varsity or varsity sport you may have conflicts on Wednesday due to your athletic pre-season schedule. If you are a confirmed fall athlete, please indicate your status and sport on the day trips registration form. If your pre-season schedule does not start until after Tuesday, August 25, you should plan to move in on August 25, and pre-register for activities if they do not conflict with your pre-season schedule. If you are unsure of your athletic status, please contact your coach for clarification.
